Chapter 540 He Will Be An Amazing Father
“What are you guys talking about?” Su Shaoqing was the first to walk through the door. Shi Nuan and Shen Qianan were chatting, and the mood between the sisters appeared amiable.
Fu Chengyan followed behind the doctor, a plate of chestnut cake in his hand. As he approached Shi Nuan, his eyes landed on the child in her embrace. His expression softened instantly. Shi Nuan caressed Yu’s little cheeks. When she noticed Fu Chengyan and Su Shaoqing’s entrance, she smiled. “It’s nothing. You men need not know about girl talk.”
“You’ve got that right!” Fu Chengyan nodded as he brought the chestnut cake over to them. He picked out a couple of slices and handed them over to Shi Nuan. “I’ve checked with Yu Qing. You can have these, just not too much!” With that, he gave two pieces to Shi Nuan and the rest to Yu.
When Yu first spotted Fu Chengyan, he became timid, as if he dared not speak. Then, when he saw the encouragement in the eyes of Shi Nuan and Fu Chengyan, Yu extended his hand to pick up a piece of chestnut cake, then stuffed it into his mouth.
Perhaps it was because the treat was so delicious that Yu could not help it when he reached for another piece once he was done with his first. Yet, he was still observing Fu Chengyan warily.
Fu Chengyan chuckled at the boy’s behavior as he stretched out his long arm. “Go on, eat!”
Yu swiftly took a piece, then instantly retreated into the comfort of Shi Nuan’s arms. Yu pecked away, the contented look on his face appeared cute to the others.
Fu Chengyan laughed. “If it’s that yummy, then just take them all!”
“Thank you!” Yu thanked the man shyly.
A grin formed on Shi Nuan’s face. “Yu, this is my husband. You should call him Uncle Chengyan.”
“Huh? He’s not Daddy?” Yu gaped at Shen Qianan.
Shen Qianan did not expect Yu would say that. Instantaneously, the air stood still.
Shen Qianan looked awkwardly at Shi Nuan and Fu Chengyan. Shi Nuan appeared unfazed, with a smile constantly on her face. Contrarily, Fu Chengyan’s expression darkened within an instant.
“Would you prefer it if Uncle Chengyan is your father?” Shi Nuan squeezed Yu’s hand. “If so, you can call him Dad!”
Shi Nuan smiled at Fu Chengyan and he stared back at her.
His cold gaze stooped toward Shi Nuan. It was a rare instance where he was no longer in a foul mood. Fu Chengyan said nothing and merely studied Shi Nuan with his eyes.
Shi Nuan just smiled lightly, not saying anything as well. Instead, it was Shen Qianan who was the one to be quick to explain, “Yu, Uncle Chengyan is Uncle Chengyan, while Daddy is Daddy! They’re not the same person.”
“But…”
“It’s fine!” Fu Chengyan said softly. His eyes carried a hint of helplessness when he saw Shi Nuan shaking her head lightly. He walked toward Yu, then picked him up. “Since you like calling me Daddy so much, then how about I take you as my godson?”
Fu Chengyan examined Shi Nuan as he spoke those words, and he noticed the tiny smile forming on her face.
Meanwhile, Shen Qianan breathed a sigh of relief. She was worried that Fu Chengyan might abruptly burst out in rage. Shen Qianan recalled how she allowed Yu to call Fu Chengyan “Daddy” during the days they were at the Fu residence. The Fu Chengyan back then was terrifying.
Yet, when Shi Nuan was around, the hostile air that typically surrounded Fu Chengyan had disappeared into thin air.
“Haha! Yu, I am your uncle!” Su Shaoqing chimed in and started to tease Yu. “I’m your mother’s elder brother!”
Yu cocked his head as he peered at his mother. It appeared as if he was questioning her.
Shen Qianan hesitated for a split second, then ultimately nodded her head. “Yu, go ahead and say hi to him!”
“Hi Uncle!”
Su Shaoqing elegantly rubbed his nose when he heard the little boy. “Good boy! I’ll buy some sweets for you later!”
A few moments passed, then Su Shaoqing glanced toward Shen Qianan. “How about now?”
Shen Qianan faltered. Realization soon dawned on her when she comprehended Su Shaoqing’s question. She then nodded. “By all means, whenever you please!”
“All right then! Follow me!” Su Shaoqing replied.
It looked like Su Shaoqing had something to say to Shen Qianan. Shi Nuan called out to them when she saw her sister leaving. “What’s the matter?”
“Ah! I’m only taking Qianan to the lab first, just to understand the situation. There’s no need to worry!” Su Shaoqing had no intentions of hiding the truth from Shi Nuan. “Qianan is your biological sister. Your blood type should match hers the most.”
Shi Nuan had a complicated look on her face. She gazed at Shen Qianan, then said, “Qianan, actually…”
“It’s all right. Can you and Chengyuan help look after Yu for a while? I’ll be back soon!” Shen Qianan caressed Yu’s cheeks. “Yu, the doctor and I have something to discuss. You go ahead and play with Aunt Nuan and Uncle Chengyan, okay?”
“Mommy, where are you going?”
“I’ll still be in the hospital, and I’ll return before you know it!” Shen Qianan pinched Yu’s cheeks. “I have my phone with me. If you start to miss Mommy, you can call me on the phone!”
“Okay then!”
Shen Qianan comforted her son, then left the hospital room with Su Shaoqing. Shen Qianan took a deep breath and smiled faintly at Su Shaoqing.
The doctor’s eyes focused on Shen Qianan. “To think that you and Shi Nuan are biological sisters!”
Su Shaoqing knew Shen Qianan from long ago, but back then, Shen Qianan was afraid of him. It had to do with Su Shaoqing’s temper, which was too good to be true. The doctor always had a smile in front of everyone, but on occasion, that smile of his was exceedingly terrifying.
Then and there, as she understood the way Su Shaoqing viewed herself, the fear Shen Qianan had of the doctor dissipated completely.
Shen Qianan nodded. “I never thought it possible either!”
“Let’s go. First, we’ll have to draw your blood at the lab to find out to what degree your blood type matches with Nuan’s.”
“How confident are you with that?”
It was not that Shen Qianan did not trust Su Shaoqing. In fact, she knew that Su Shaoqing was an exceptionally skilled doctor. The problem was that the matter had to do with Shi Nuan’s safety, which prompted Shen Qianan to ask her questions.
“Truthfully? I actually don’t have a single shred of confidence!” As the doctor caught sight of the astonishment deep within Shen Qianan’s eyes, he tugged at the corner of his mouth. “This disease is extremely rare, and it’s the first time I’ve ever encountered it. This is why I cannot discern the rate of success whatsoever.”
“But…” Shen Qianan stuttered. If that is so, then why are we doing this in the first place?
Her expression darkened. “The baby in Nuan’s tummy won’t be affected, right?”
“For now, no!” the doctor replied.
Su Shaoqing pushed the lab door open. Perhaps it was because that Su Shaoqing had made a request in advance, the lab was completely empty.
In the spacious lab, there was only Su Shaoqing, alone together with Shen Qianan. The doctor poured the woman a cup of water such that she might loosen up with a drink. He then assembled his tools. “You can close your eyes if you’re afraid of blood.”
Shen Qianan chuckled. “I’m no longer a child!”
Su Shaoqing wavered for a second, then responded, “You’re right!”
Su Shaoqing was quick with his work. Once he was done drawing Shen Qianan’s blood, he passed her a piece of cotton. “Press on this first, and try not to move. We took a lot of blood, I’m worried you might be dizzy.” As Su Shaoqing spoke, he took a piece of coconut candy out of his pocket and held it out for Shen Qianan.
Dumbfounded, Shen Qianan stared at Su Shaoqing. The doctor then peeled open the wrapper and gave Shen Qianan the candy. “Eat something before you get dizzy!”
Shen Qianan bobbed her head in a daze. She then opened her mouth and ate the candy.
She gawked at Su Shaoqing. Her eyes carried a trace of bewilderment.
Conversely, Su Shaoqing carried on nonchalantly. After all, Shen Qianan was then part of the Su family, and she had never done anything too criminal in nature. Furthermore, the doctor bore no grudges against Shen Qianan. In truth, he was secretly happy from the bottom of his heart when the relationship between Shen Qianan and Shi Nuan took a turn for the better.
“We should wait for a moment before we head back. The lab results would only come out tomorrow, at the latest. Also, I cannot guarantee that the results would be promising.” said Su Shaoqing.
Shen Qianan nodded. The sense of light-headedness she experienced before eased after she had the candy. She set the cotton down, then peered at Su Shaoqing. “Um… About the viral shot that Fu Chengyan mentioned…”
Su Shaoqing gaped at Shen Qianan, stunned that she would be the one to have brought the matter up. “You…” Su Shaoqing hesitated. “You can say no. If Nuan found out, she wouldn’t agree to it either!”
To the doctor’s surprise, Shen Qianan shook her head. “Don’t let Nuan know!”
“But…”
“Don’t worry, I’m fine. I’ve discussed it with Fu Chengyan before.”
“Still…” Su Shaoqing understood then that no matter what he said, Shen Qianan had already made up her mind. He smiled apprehensively. “That would still have to wait. We have yet to take Nuan’s blood. And besides, it’d still take some time before I could get my hands on the shot.”
“Okay!” Shen Qianan nodded.
Meanwhile, at Shi Nuan’s side, Yu asked to be set down the moment Shen Qianan left the room, and Fu Chengyan complied. Yu then wobbled on his short, tiny legs over to Shi Nuan and climbed into her embrace. His hands wrapped around Shi Nuan’s abdomen. “Aunt Nuan, why is your tummy so big?”
His gaze was fixed on Shi Nuan’s stomach, and there was a definite sense of curiosity emanating from him. Shi Nuan ended up chuckling due to Yu’s childish behavior. She then guided Yu’s hand and rubbed her lips gently. “That’s because there are two cute little babies in my tummy!”
“Little babies?” Yu blinked repeatedly. The little boy’s eyes shone brightly. “Are they like me?”
“That’s right! They’re cute little babies just like you!”
Shi Nuan beamed. “But they’re slightly smaller than Yu. They’re your little brother and sister!”
“Really?” Yu grinned from ear to ear at Shi Nuan’s words. “Then Aunt Nuan, when will they come out?”
“Ah! About that, we’ll need to wait for a few more months. Then, the little babies can come out!” Shi Nuan reached out and pinched Yu’s nose. “Once they’re out, hopefully, you will love them!”
“I do! I love them a lot!” The little boy bobbed his head profusely. “I don’t have any friends to play with. Can your babies play with me one day, Aunt Nuan?”
“For sure!” Shi Nuan’s smile grew wider. The sunlight shone into the room, falling on Shi Nuan and Yu.
Fu Chengyan looked on from their side. A singular expression of joy and tenderness took form on his face as he observed the interaction between his wife and the little boy.
As for Shen Qianan and Su Shaoqing, they were standing at the doorway then and had witnessed the exchange. There was a touch of red in Shen Qianan’s eyes. The entire situation, wherein Yu and Shi Nuan were getting along as well as Fu Chengyan who stood attentively by them, felt somewhat foreign to Shen Qianan.
The three of them together seemed like a happy family, peaceful and happy.
Apparently moved by that scene, Shen Qianan merely waited by the door and watched on, a smile of relief on her face.
Su Shaoqing’s eyes twinkled. “Looks like Chengyan will be an amazing dad one day!”
