I Want a Lifetime with You Chapter 509

Chapter 509 A Mysterious Series Of Events

“So, you think I’m the one who did it?” Fu Chengyan asked. “No!” Shi Nuan denied while shaking her head. After all, if it was him, he wouldn’t have agreed to help Huancheng out. “I know it wasn’t you, but I have no idea who it could have been. It’s not like Huancheng is that big of a company, so I doubt it has many enemies. I just can’t think of anyone who would want to target Huancheng.”

“Maybe you should start thinking about why this happened to Huancheng just when I was about to make my move,” Fu Chengyan suggested as he patted the back of her hand. That left Shi Nuan dumbfounded. “What does that mean?”

She started to have a bad feeling about it. “Wait. Are you saying that there’s someone targeting you? Why would they try to hurt the Shi family, though?”

That hadn’t even occurred to her. There was no way she could have imagined that someone would try to use the Shi family to hurt Fu Chengyan. It just didn’t seem realistic. Even so, it seemed that Fu Chengyan was sure about the fact that the culprit had only targeted the Shi family in an effort to hurt him.

“Have you forgotten that Grandfather gave me all of Huancheng’s shares? Grandfather is the only one who knows about that. Nobody else is aware. What if someone were to make a big deal out of the whole ordeal?” he prompted.

“So, what you’re saying is that this person tried to frame you using Grandfather and that they wanted everyone to think that you did it to get your hands on Huancheng’s shares? That’s impossible, though. Grandfather would know. He’s-” Shi Nuan was interrupted by the ringing of her phone.

Thus, she picked up the call. “Hello? What did you say, Mr. Yang?”

The color drained out of her face after hearing what Uncle Yang told her. She clutched onto Fu Chengyan’s hand and exclaimed, “We have to go to the hospital now, Yan!”

“What’s going on?” Fu Chengyan raised his eyebrows. He could tell that something was off by how pale in the face Shi Nuan was.

“Mr. Yang told me that Grandfather had a sudden heart attack. He’s undergoing emergency treatment right now. H-He…” She got choked up and couldn’t speak any further.

A cold glint flashed across Fu Chengyan’s eyes when he heard what she said. His gaze turned solemn as he grabbed her hand and said, “Don’t worry. Grandfather will be fine. Let’s go to the hospital right away.”

“Okay,” Shi Nuan mumbled. Her mind had gone completely blank at that point. All she could do was let him drag her down the stairs.

However, when they reached the bottom of the staircase, Fu Chengyan received a call from Su Shaoqing, who uttered, “There’s something I have to tell you, Chengyan.”

He frowned. “What is it? I don’t have the time to talk nonsense with you. I need to get to the hospital right now.”

“That’s exactly what I wanted to tell you about. Old Master Shi… has just passed away,” Su Shaoqing stated.

Fu Chengyan paused in his steps, and his gaze grew even sharper. “What did you just say?”

“Old Master Shi just had a heart attack. He received emergency treatment, but he didn’t make it. He’s dead.”

Fu Chengyan tightened his grip on the phone. He heard Shi Nuan stumble, and she nearly fell down the stairs.

“May!” he yelled. He immediately hung up the phone and grabbed onto her. “What happened?”

Shi Nuan’s face was pale as a sheet. She held onto his hand with a death grip and mumbled, “What did Shaoqing just say? He must have gotten it wrong, right, Yan? Grandfather is still receiving emergency treatment, isn’t he? He’ll be fine, right?”

It was as if she was a ship lost at sea. She refused to let go of Fu Chengyan’s hand. Even though her fingernails were digging into Fu Chengyan’s purlicue, she didn’t notice at all.

Fu Chengyan furrowed his eyebrows. He stretched out and grabbed the backside of her hand. “Calm down, May. Listen to me.”

“I don’t want to listen, Yan!” she protested.

“Grandfather has passed away, May. You have to face reality, okay? I’m still with you, May,” Fu Chengyan coaxed as he put both of his hands on her shoulders.

“B-But Grandfather was fine two days ago… He was perfectly fine, so why… Why did he suddenly die?” Shi Nuan was in complete denial. She refused to believe that Shi Yunsheng would just pass away like that. He had been by her side for all of her life and had cared for her during the tough times. She had even wanted to have kids and let Shi Yunsheng meet his grandchildren.

“You can’t bring someone back from the dead, May. Listen to me. Nobody could be around forever. Even though Grandfather is gone, he’ll always stay in your heart,” Fu Chengyan cried.

“Yan!” Shi Nuan wailed as she hugged his waist. “Why? Why is this happening?”

They ended up going to the hospital anyway. Unfortunately, they didn’t get to see Shi Yunsheng one last time.

Shi Yunsheng’s death was a quick and painless one. Even so, it was quite a heavy blow to Shi Nuan. It seemed impossible for her to process that Shi Yunsheng had passed away. She kept standing outside of the ward as she silently watched the doctor confirm his death.

Her eyes were glazed over like she was in a world of her own. She didn’t even blink while staring at Shi Yunsheng. It was as if she thought that as long as she kept her eye on him, he wouldn’t leave.

The door to the ward suddenly swung open as Shi Jingzheng helped Jiang Yu into the room. The moment Jiang Yu caught sight of Shi Nuan, she rushed over like a madman. “Shi Nuan, you jinx! How dare you come here? I’ll beat you up!”

Jiang Yu moved fast, and Shi Nuan didn’t manage to react in time. Before she could even try to dodge, she received a crisp smack to the face.

Jiang Yu had put all of her strength into that slap. She gave Shi Nuan a stern glare as she grumbled, “It’s all because of you. If it weren’t for you, nothing would have happened to Wei. Dad wouldn’t have died of fury, either. You’re such a b*tch, Shi Nuan. You’re just like your mother. Both of you are nothing but jinxes. The two of you were born just to wreak havoc on us innocent people’s lives.”

Shi Nuan stared back at her in a daze. She felt herself get choked up as she listened to Jiang Yu’s insults. It was like she could barely breathe.

Jiang Yu once again reached out to hit Shi Nuan, but Fu Chengyan grabbed her hand before she could do so. He threw her to the side aggressively and thundered, “Even though I’m grateful for the kindness Grandfather had shown me, that doesn’t mean I’ll let you do whatever you want, Mrs. Shi.”

He frowned when he saw Shi Nuan’s swollen face and kicked himself for not reacting faster. Because of his delayed response, she had suffered a slap to the face.

“Who do you think you are, Fu Chengyan? Do you think you’re all that just because the Fu clan is rich? This is an affair involving the Shi family. You don’t have the right to poke your nose into our business,” Jiang Yu retorted.

Fu Chengyan narrowed his eyes in response and stared at her so viciously that Jiang Yu began to tremble. Despite that, she continued shrieking at him. “Oh, I get it. You’re just after the Shi family’s fortune, aren’t you? Hmph. Don’t even think about it. Get out of here right now!”

“Grandfather is gone, Mrs. Shi. Don’t worry. I’m not after the Shi family’s assets. I just want to be by his side in his last moments. I-” Shi Nuan started.

“Get out! All of you, get lost right now!” Jiang Yu roared.

She grabbed Shi Nuan’s hand and violently pushed her out of the room. “If you don’t leave, then I’ll call the police. So, are you leaving or not?”

“May.” Fu Chengyan shook his head while grabbing her hand.

Shi Nuan, however, was indignant. She wanted to go back in, but he wouldn’t let her. “She’s right, May. You’re no longer a member of the Shi family. You don’t have the right to go in.”

“But Grandfather is…” Shi Nuan trailed off and watched as the doctor finished things up and waited for a signature from the patient’s family members. After that, Shi Yunsheng was taken away. Even then, she couldn’t accept that Shi Yunsheng was already gone.

She kept standing by the door until Shi Jingzheng and Jiang Yu finally took his body away. Only then did she burst into tears.

Fu Chengyan, who was beside her the whole time, didn’t know what to do.

Eventually, Shi Nuan cried herself to sleep. He gently picked her up in his arms and went to Su Shaoqing’s office.

When Su Shaoqing saw the condition that Shi Nuan was in, he hurriedly opened the door to the lounge so that she could rest there instead.

Fu Chengyan carefully placed her onto a bed, then tucked her in snugly. Only then did he leave.

Su Shaoqing leaned against the chair with both of his hands behind his head as he clicked his tongue. “Tsk. What a devoted husband you are, Chengyan.”

Fu Chengyan squinted with a dangerous look in his eyes. Su Shaoqing immediately raised his hands in surrender. “Okay, okay. I’ll shut up.”

He then shot a glance in the direction of the lounge before stating in a serious tone, “There’s something off about this.”

Fu Chengyan nodded in agreement. If there wasn’t anything amiss, he wouldn’t have gone to Su Shaoqing’s office. “How’s Old Master Shi’s condition been lately?” he asked.

“His condition had been stable. In fact, he was supposed to get discharged soon. That’s why this seems weird to me,” Su Shaoqing replied as he tapped on the desk with his slender fingers.

“What about the surveillance footage? I’m sure there’s a camera in his room,” Fu Chengyan suggested.

It wasn’t logical for Shi Yunsheng to suddenly have a heart attack. The only explanation was that someone had come to the hospital and somehow provoked him. It was just too much of a coincidence.

“That’s what I thought of, too. The first thing I did was check the surveillance footage, but I found nothing,” Su Shaoqing revealed. That was why he was so confused. “Who do you think it could be, Chengyan? The Shi family is poor and humble, not to mention that Huancheng isn’t really worth this much effort, either. Someone lost their life in this whole ordeal.”

“You think so too?” Fu Chengyan raised his eyebrows and stared at Su Shaoqing with an unfathomable look in his eyes. Su Shaoqing retracted his hands and sat up straight. His gaze darkened as well. “Are you saying that someone caused a scene on purpose?”

“It’s possible. If their target were the Shi family and Huancheng, there was no need for them to go so far as to take someone’s life,” Fu Chengyan pointed out.

“Unless they have an ulterior motive. Maybe their true goal isn’t Huancheng and the Shi family. Instead, it’s…” Su Shaoqing cut himself off as his gaze landed on Fu Chengyan.

The latter frowned. “What are you looking at me for?”

Su Shaoqing simply smirked in response with a playful look in his eyes. “Did you get on someone’s bad side? It looks like whoever’s behind this is after you, not the Shi family.”
