Chapter 514 The Chilling Man
“Why would you say that?” Shi Nuan stared at Fu Chengyan in confusion. In her mind, Yun Shen was nothing but a rich, spoiled brat. Fu Chengyan’s lips curled into a smirk. “You’ll find out soon enough.”
“I see.” Shi Nuan had little interest in Yun Shen. She was not bothered by what kind of person he was. As long as Yun Shen doesn’t get in my way, I don’t really care what he is like.
On the other hand, Yun Shen, who was standing at the side, was bemused by Shi Nuan’s indifferent attitude toward him. I was the one who saved you back then. What a heartless woman! “What are you looking at?”
Suddenly, a man walked over to Yun Shen’s side. The well-groomed man had an extraordinary appearance. Under careful observation, one could spot the similarities between him and Yun Shen. Nevertheless, the latter looked devilish, whereas the man had a look of righteousness.
“Just a wild kitten.” Yun Shen smirked and asked, “Jing, why did you come out?”
Yun Jing was Yun Shen’s elder brother from another mother. Both of them did not have any rift on the surface.
However, Yun Jing disapproved of Yun Shen’s ways of doing things. Following the latter’s gaze, his line of vision soon landed on Shi Nuan. Yun Jing could not help but stare at her intensely.
Seeing that, Yun Shen broke into a mischievous grin. “Jing, do you find her interesting too?”
Yun Jing had retracted his gaze by then. “How many times have I told you? Don’t get too close with people from the Fu clan, especially Fu Chengyan!” he snapped.
“Why are you afraid of him?” Yun Shen raised his eyebrows. He was not at all intimidated nor did he have high regard for Fu Chengyan. Still, his gaze moved from Fu Chengyan and eventually fell on Shi Nuan once more. “Jing, what do you think of that wild kitten?”
Frowning, Yun Jing exclaimed, “Yun Shen, don’t say I didn’t warn you!”
“Fine. You’re so boring!” Hands tucked in his pockets, Yun Shen pursed his lips in annoyance. As he turned to leave, he arched an eyebrow at Shi Nuan. Yun Jing decided to stop lecturing due to Yun Shen’s words. However, his piercing gaze never moved away from Shi Nuan.
His burning gaze was even more blatant than Yun Shen just now. Raising her head, Shi Nuan met Yun Jing’s gaze. She could not help but feel surprised.
Shi Nuan had never met Yun Jing before. Nevertheless, she noticed some familiarity from his keen eyes that had been staring at her all this while. This sense of déjà vu was odd for her. It was as if Yun Jing could see through her.
Sensing Shi Nuan’s peculiar expression, Fu Chengyan gazed down at her and asked, “What’s wrong?”
Shaking her head, Shi Nuan withdrew her gaze. “When can we leave?” She made no attempts to conceal her dislike of that place.
Fu Chengyan nodded and said, “We’ll leave soon.” As he said that, Yun Jing approached them. His searing gaze had finally moved away from Shi Nuan. “It’s been a while, Mr. Fu,” he greeted.
Nodding slightly, Fu Chengyan looked inquisitively at Yun Jing. ”Indeed, Master Yun!”
Yun Jing nodded in return before asking, “Who is this?”
“She’s my wife, Shi Nuan!” Fu Chengyan introduced before looking at Shi Nuan. “May, this is Yun Jing, the eldest son of the Yun family.”
“Nice to meet you, Master Yun.” Shi Nuan smiled and stretched out her hand.
Even though she did not express it, Shi Nuan murmured inwardly.
I didn’t expect this man to be the young master of the Yun family. Does it mean that he is Yun Shen’s elder brother? Why was he looking at me like that just now?
Despite her doubts, Shi Nuan did not dare make her thoughts known.
Smirking, Yun Jing reached out to shake Shi Nuan’s hand and immediately withdrew it. “Mr. Fu, I hope you’ll forgive me for the lack of hospitality.”
“You’re too kind, Master Yun.” Fu Chengyan was obviously not well-acquainted with Yun Jing as their conversation ended abruptly.
The real protagonist of this birthday banquet for Jiang Jingyun was actually Yun Jing. He was basically in charge of the Yun family and their business. Even though both Yun Mu and Yun Shen were also part of the family, the firstborn tended to end up as the most favored child.
Jiang Jingyun intended to introduce everyone to the future head of the Yun family. As a result, Yun Jing was the busiest person at this banquet.
Yun Jing left immediately after greeting Fu Chengyan. Only then did Shi Nuan tug at the latter’s sleeve before confessing, ”I don’t like him.”
“Huh? Then tell me, which person from the Yun family do you like?” Fu Chengyan arched his brows, feeling amused by her remark.
Shi Nuan pouted. “I’m dead serious!” Despite his noble appearance, she felt that Yun Jing was a dangerous man for some inexplicable reason.
Still, Fu Chengyan had a point. Even though I find Yun Shen quite disagreeable, I dislike Yun Jing even more. I can’t pinpoint the reason why, but I just don’t like him at all.
“It’s fine if you don’t like him. It’s not worth befriending the Yun family anyway.” Fu Chengyan smiled lightly.
“All right.”
It was normal for people to mingle with each other during the banquet. Even though Shi Nuan and Fu Chengyan preferred not to socialize with the guests, there would always be people who came to greet them. The process was tedious and time-consuming for them.
Holding Shi Nuan’s hand, Fu Chengyan brought her to congratulate Jiang Jingyun on her birthday. She was in good spirits despite her age. Supported by Yun Jing, Jiang Jingyun stared at Fu Chengyan, who was holding Shi Nuan’s hand carefully. She asked, ”You’re Yan, Fu Sheng’s son?”
“Great-aunt!” Fu Chengyan answered Jiang Jingyun’s question enthusiastically by addressing his elder appropriately.
Jiang Jingyun flashed a kind smile at him. “Oh. This is amazing. You’re all grown up now. And this is…” Her gaze fell on Shi Nuan. She could not help glancing up and down at the latter. Suddenly, Jiang Jingyun’s eyes widened in surprise. “Jing, isn’t she-”
“Grandma, this is Mr. Fu’s wife, Ms. Shi Nuan.” Yun Jing cut her off abruptly.
Jiang Jingyun’s expression froze, but she nodded in response. ”Oh! So, you’re Yan’s wife? Come here quickly and let me take a closer look at you.”
Frowning, Shi Nuan glanced at Fu Chengyan. Seeing his approval, she walked over to Jiang Jingyun with a bright smile. ”Happy birthday to you, Old Mrs. Yun! May you be blessed with good health and live a long life.”
“Oho. This child has a sweet tongue!” Jiang Jingyun reached out and touched the back of Shi Nuan’s hands. While smiling, her sharp eyes were staring at Shi Nuan intently. “She’s a pretty girl. Yan, you’re blessed to have her as your wife,” the old lady added.
Shi Nuan was embarrassed by Jiang Jingyun’s enthusiasm. Nevertheless, Shi Nuan decided to stay quiet given it was the latter’s birthday.
“Grandma, you’re scaring her.” Smiling helplessly, Yun Jing reached out to draw Jiang Jingyun’s hand back. His long fingers inadvertently touched Shi Nuan, which caused her to recoil.
Shi Nuan looked at Yun Jing uneasily. However, he appeared unfazed with a smile on his face. While comforting Jiang Jingyun, he looked at Shi Nuan. “Mrs. Fu, I hope you won’t mind. My grandma seems very fond of you.”
“Haha.” At a loss for words, Shi Nuan laughed dryly in response. She retreated to Fu Chengyan’s side.
Fu Chengyan’s bright eyes moved away from Yun Jing silently. He instantly pulled Shi Nuan into his embrace as though to assert his dominance in front of everyone.
Resignedly, Shi Nuan tugged on Fu Chengyan’s sleeve. “Let’s go.”
“Okay.” Fu Chengyan nodded and asked Zhou Zheng to bring the gifts before saying goodbye to Jiang Jingyun. Hearing that Fu Chengyan and Shi Nuan were leaving, Jiang Jingyun seemed unwilling to let them go. “Are you leaving so soon?”
“May isn’t feeling well, so we’ll take our leave now. We’ll pay you a visit next time.”
Upon hearing that, Jiang Jingyun decided not to keep pestering Fu Chengyan. Suddenly, she took off the bracelet from her wrist and grabbed Shi Nuan’s hands. “Although this is the first time I’ve met you, I like you very much. I don’t have anything else to give you. So, please accept this jade bracelet.”
“H-How can I possibly accept such a precious gift?” Shi Nuan was overwhelmed by the offering. Hence, she wanted to reject it. On the other hand, Yun Jing raised his brows slightly and grinned. “Mrs. Fu, you should accept the bracelet since my grandma personally gave it to you. She isn’t someone who likes to give things away easily. I guess she’s very fond of you!”
At that moment, Shi Nuan could not come up with an excuse to decline Yun Jing.
A glint flashed across Fu Chengyan’s dark eyes as he reached out to accept the bracelet. He put it on Shi Nuan’s wrist and said, “We shall accept the gift then. Thank you!”
Parting her lips, Shi Nuan wanted to say something. Nevertheless, Fu Chengyan interjected, “It’s getting late. We’ll be leaving now.”
With that, Fu Chengyan led Shi Nuan through the guests before leaving the Yun residence.
Shi Nuan heaved a sigh of relief after coming out of the Yun residence. “Yan, the Yun family is really weird.”
“How so?” Fu Chengyan laughed at her comment.
“I don’t know how to describe it. Why does Old Mrs. Yun like me?” Shi Nuan could not fathom the reason. She felt uneasy with Jiang Jingyun and Yun Jing’s utterances.
Peering at the jade bracelet on her wrist, Shi Nuan asked, “Why would she give me this?”
Fu Chengyan’s eyes suddenly darkened. “This is something from the Fu clan.”
“The Fu clan? How can you tell?” Shi Nuan smacked her lips in surprise.
“My grandma also had one back then. They look exactly the same.” Fu Chengyan’s gaze fell on Shi Nuan’s hand. “This is considered a family heirloom of the Fu clan. My great-grandma gave it to my grandma and my great-aunt. After Grandma passed away, the bracelet was given to Aunt Ning. Great-aunt didn’t return this to the Fu clan after she got remarried. I didn’t expect her to give it to you today.”
Judging by Fu Chengyan’s explanation, the bracelet was a meaningful gift.
Shi Nuan clicked her tongue and asked, “Well, should I return this to Grandpa?”
“There’s no need for that. Since it’s given to you, you should wear it,” Fu Chengyan said. Anyway, this bracelet belongs to the Fu clan. Even if we return it to Grandpa, he’ll probably hand it to Shi Nuan. It will be a waste of time.
“All right.” Shi Nuan nodded. However, her heart felt heavy after accepting the bracelet. “Yan, don’t you think Old Mrs. Yun and Yun Jing are a bit strange?”
Fu Chengyan narrowed his eyes. “What’s wrong with them?”
“Old Mrs. Yun seems to know me. The same goes for Yun Jing,” Shi Nuan elucidated. She was perplexed by the way Yun Jing had been staring at her. Besides, Yun Jing’s hand was as cold as ice when I accidentally touched him just now. It gave me a chill for some reason.
