Chapter 503 Shi Nuan Is A Jinx
Shi Nuan barely managed to sleep for a short while at home before she was jolted awake by Fu Chengyan. The man looked unsettled as he pulled Shi Nuan up from the bed. He put his hands on her shoulders and patted her, all the while speaking with a serious expression on his face. “May, I have something to tell you, but before that, you have to promise me to stay calm.”
Shi Nuan, who had been groggy, became clear-headed instantly at the sight of Fu Chengyan’s face. “What is it?”
He replied, “May, Mr. Yang just called me. He said that Grandpa’s fainted. He’s been sent to the hospital for emergency treatment.”
“What did you say?” Shi Nuan blurted.
She was now fully awake. She pushed Fu Chengyan away and clambered down from the bed. Fu Chengyan went forward to support her. “Slow down!”
“How could he have fainted? Grandpa was energetic when we visited him yesterday!” Tears welled up in Shi Nuan’s eyes.
“Calm down, May!” Fu Chengyan grabbed Shi Nuan’s shoulders and frowned as he muttered, “This is exactly what I fear. You’re panicking.”
Shi Nuan couldn’t calm herself down at all. She changed her clothes hastily and, grabbing Fu Chengyan’s hand, she charged outside. “Yan, nothing will happen to Grandpa, right?”
“Yes. He will be fine.” Fu Chengyan nodded.
His large hand clamped around Shi Nuan’s smaller hand in an attempt to give her some comfort. He added, “I promise.”
When they reached the hospital, Shi Yunsheng was still in the operating room. The butler spotted Shi Nuan and Fu Chengyan first. He approached them quickly. “Ms. Nuan, Mr. Fu, you’re finally here.”
Shi Nuan nodded in response and then hurriedly asked, “Mr. Yang, what happened to Grandpa? Why did he faint so suddenly?”
Upon hearing the question, Mr. Yang threw a glare in Shi Wei’s direction. Shi Nuan followed his line of sight and saw Shi Wei, who was in a daze. Shi Nuan narrowed her eyes at the woman, and then tightened her grip on Mr. Yang’s hand. “Mr. Yang?”
Jiang Yu cut in, “What do you mean by suddenly fainting? What’s with that look? Your grandpa is old. It’s normal to faint at his age, isn’t it? He was admitted into the hospital last time due to a stroke.”
“It’s normal to faint?” Shi Nuan looked at Jiang Yu in disbelief. “For your information, Grandpa’s stroke isn’t a coincidence. What did you guys do to him?”
Right now, Shi Nuan did not believe a single word coming out of Jiang Yu’s mouth, or anyone else’s, for that matter. When Jiang Yu heard Shi Nuan’s reproach, she got angry. “What do you mean by that? Anyway, what makes you qualified to criticize us? You’re not even part of the Shi family! How dare you speak to us in such a disrespectful tone!”
“Enough! Can’t you two control yourselves? We don’t even know how your grandpa is doing inside right now!” Shi Jingzheng snapped as he glared at Jiang Yu and Shi Nuan. He glanced at Shi Nuan briefly as he spoke, but then he took a deep breath and chose to ignore them due to exhaustion.
Fu Chengyan’s bright eyes landed on the three members of the Shi family before he finally locked his gaze on Shi Wei. Shi Wei was still in a daze as she sat on the chair. Her eyes had lost focus. No one knew what she was thinking.
Fu Chengyan narrowed his eyes and smiled before he turned to Mr. Yang. The butler seemed to have noticed his gaze, as he instinctively turned to face Fu Chengyan. “Can I help you, Mr. Fu?”
Lightly shaking his head, Fu Chengyan answered, “No, not at the moment. I’ve called Shaoqing a while ago. A specialist will be coming to check on Grandpa later.”
Mr. Yang heaved a sigh of relief once he heard that. “Thank goodness you’re here, Mr. Fu.”
Fu Chengyan nodded before brining Shi Nuan to rest elsewhere. Jiang Yu’s eyes were constantly on Shi Nuan. Seeing how Shi Nuan looked at the moment, Jiang Yu’s eyes glinted with ferocity.
Su Shaoqing called for a physician right after he received Fu Chengyan’s call. Then, they entered the operating room. Su Shaoqing’s arrival undoubtedly calmed Shi Nuan down. Her nerves were eased for now.
“Chengyan, come over for a bit,” Su Shaoqing’s voice called Fu Chengyan away, leaving Shi Nuan alone as she stared transfixed at the operating room.
Honestly, Shi Nuan was afraid. Most of the love she had received in her childhood came from Jiang Shizheng and Shi Yunsheng. To Shi Nuan, they were her closest relatives.
Shi Nuan had never given much thought to the natural process of life. Faced with the current situation, she was forced to think about it. While she was growing up, Shi Yunsheng was also gradually growing old. It was a fact she didn’t want to face, but she had to.
“Shi Nuan, you’re a jinx! A misfortune!” Jiang Yu, who had been bottling up her anger, approached Shi Nuan once Fu Chengyan left. She proceeded to slap her on the cheek.
Not expecting a retaliation in public, Shi Nuan was stunned by the act. The burning feeling on one side of her cheek snapped Shi Nuan back to reality.
Jiang Yu raised her hand and prepared to give Shi Nuan another slap, but Shi Nuan stood up suddenly and grabbed it. Jiang Yu struggled against Shi Nuan’s hold, but she could not free herself. “You jinx, let go!”
“Let go of you? So that you can slap me again?” Shi Nuan’s cold, harsh tone pierced through Jiang Yu’s heart. Jiang Yu looked at Shi Nuan in disbelief. She could not believe that Shi Nuan was no longer the punching bag she used to be.
Shi Nuan dropped Jiang Yu’s hand harshly, causing the latter to lose her balance and stumble backward until her back bumped into the wall. Jiang Yu scowled. “You brat!”
“Mrs. Shi, I advise you to think of the consequences before you speak or act. I’m no longer that Shi Nuan you used to know. Do you think I’ll stand still and allow you do as you please as I did in the past?” Shi Nuan glared at Jiang Yu and said, “Know your place before you think about beating up others.”
“You—”
“What? Do you still want to hit me, Mrs. Shi? You called me a jinx, didn’t you? Or was it misfortune? I don’t think you even know what those terms mean!” Shi Nuan gave Jiang Yu a cold look as she caressed her cheek that had endured the slap.
“You…”
Shi Nuan interrupted Jiang Yu, “What about me? Grandpa is in the operating room, and you’re here picking a fight with me!”
“That’s enough, Jiang Yu. Aren’t you embarrassed? Shut it!” Shi Jingzheng, who felt a headache coming, said to Jiang Yu. Then, he shifted his attention to Shi Nuan. “And you! You’re still one of the Shi family. As long as your name is in the family registrar, she’s still considered your mother. Is this how you should treat your elders?”
Shi Nuan snickered. Since Shi Jingzheng had chosen to side with Jiang Yu, she would not hesitate to put him down too. “Then, is this how an elder treats the younger members of the family? Is it right for her to call their daughter a b*tch or a jinx all the time? I’m only here today to visit Grandpa. Besides that, I have nothing to do with the Shi family.”
“All right! Since you said you have nothing to do with us, give us back the company shares!” Jiang Yu cut in and brought up the matter.
Her words seemed to have startled Shi Nuan, who turned to look at Shi Wei, still in a daze. Shi Nuan’s face darkened.
“Why are you looking at Wei? What evil scheme are you plotting again?” Jiang Yu was adamant that Shi Nuan was up to no good. She was prejudiced toward the latter.
However, Shi Nuan faced Jiang Yu calmly. “Are you joking, Mrs. Shi? What can I do? However, I do remember something. Earlier today, Ms. Shi came to me and asked for my shares too. I told her I’ve sold mine, then she left in a fury. Isn’t that right, Ms. Shi?”
Shi Wei lifted her head when her name was called. When she saw Shi Nuan, Shi Wei quickly rose to her feet, her reddened eyes making contact with Shi Nuan’s. Shi Wei said, “You b*tch, why are you here? You planned this, didn’t you? You deliberately told me that Grandpa knew that you’ve sold the shares. You knew I’d go looking for him. You knew I’d argue with him, then I’d anger him, and he’d faint. What are you up to?”
Shi Nuan narrowed her eyes. Her gaze flashed with a sharp glint as she walked toward Shi Wei. “What are you talking about? Say that again! You went looking for Grandpa. You argued with him. You angered him, and then he fainted, all because you brought up the issue about the shares?”
“I…” Shi Wei, having regained her senses, was shocked that she had let slipped of the truth, “No! Shi Nuan, you’re framing me! I didn’t argue with Grandpa! I didn’t anger him! You’re spouting nonsense!”
“Whether it is, we all heard you. Mr. Yang can be a witness,” Shi Nuan countered.
“Shi Nuan, you’re a despicable woman! I’m going to teach you a lesson today!” Jiang Yu, seeing that Shi Nuan was onto Shi Wei, had nothing to lose, charged forward. She wanted to beat up Shi Nuan.
Shi Nuan took a step back, causing Jiang Yu to miss, but the woman came after her again. “Shi Nuan, you ungrateful wr*tch. I’ll beat you up today!”
Right after she said that, Jiang Yu screamed in pain.
No one saw what happened. By the time they caught on, Jiang Yu was already on the ground, while Shi Nuan was in Fu Chengyan’s arms.
Jiang Yu clutched her stomach painfully, feeling as thought her bones were falling apart.
Shi Jingzheng and Shi Wei were stunned. By the time they recovered, they saw Jiang Yu rolling on the ground and groaning in pain. Her face was rather pale.
“Mom!” Shi Wei shouted. She immediately ran over, but she barely touched her mother when Jiang Yu howled even more. “Ouch! Don’t touch me.”
“Mom, what’s wrong?” Shi Wei didn’t dare to touch Jiang Yu, but she was concerned about her mother’s pale face. Shrinking back, Shi Wei instinctively turned to Fu Chengyan, whose cold expression and sharp glare sent her shivering.
Fu Chengyan stared coldly at Shi Wei and Jiang Yu before he said, “You asked for it!”
“Mr. Fu, you…”
Lowering his gaze, Fu Chengyan’s gaze landed on Shi Nuan’s face, he got angrier. “Oh? I can’t even bear to lay a finger on her, and yet you dare to hit her? How bold of you!”
