Chapter 580 Between Us
After Yu’s arrival, Shen Qianan seemed much more relaxed. It was most probably because the worry that had been weighing heavily on her heart was removed.
Carrying her son, she walked toward Fu Chengyan and Shi Nuan with a smile on her face. “Yu and I will live here for the time being, then.”
“Sure.” Shi Nuan, too, displayed a smile as she reached out to touch Yu’s face. Feeling the boy’s tender cheek, she found herself being overwhelmed with a fondness for him. “Yu, do you still remember me?”
“Aunt Nuan!” Yu blinked and stared at her cutely. With that, Shi Nuan felt like her heart almost melted. “Yu, you’re such a good boy. You and your mommy will live here from now on, okay?”
“Okay!” Yu smiled shyly. “I like you too, Aunt Nuan!” The next moment, he shifted his gaze toward Fu Chengyan, looking somehow confused.
Shi Nuan smiled again. “This is my husband. You should call him Uncle Chengyan.”
Despite only understanding half of it, Yu nodded and uttered, “Uncle Chengyan!”
“Mmh!” Fu Chengyan nodded too. “Good boy!”
“Ms. Qianan, this kid is so cute. Let me carry him!” Huo Ling was an adolescent herself, but she liked children very much, including Bao and Yu.
She thought they were so adorable. “Yu, let me hug you!” she cooed.
The boy darted a timid glance at her and then at his mother, who put him right in Huo Ling’s arms. “Yu, this is Huo Ling.”
“Ling!” Yu buried his head into Huo Ling’s embrace shyly. Smelling her scent, he blushed even redder, which caused Huo Ling to grow fonder of him. “Good boy. Let me give you some candy!”
In the evening, Su Shaoqing and Li Heng came over again. Pei Huan also brought Bao along. Li Heng thought it was fine for him and his family to come together since Pei Huan and Bao wanted to visit Shi Nuan. Yet, to his surprise, Su Shaoqing tagged along too.
Even though Wutong Residence was spacious, it felt crowded all of a sudden with so many visitors.
Instantly, the initial quiet place became merry thanks to the lively group.
The servants and chef of the Fu residence were also sent here by Fu Zhengyun.
In truth, he was still mad at Fu Chengyan for being unwilling to go back. However, he thought he should not let his granddaughter-in-law starve, so he picked the most diligent servants from his house and sent them here.
Undoubtedly, Fu Chengyan did not like it as Wutong Residence initially had no servants. Nonetheless, he did not reject his grandfather’s offer after considering Shi Nuan’s condition.
The chef, who was busy preparing food in the kitchen, saw the exuberant crowd consisting of adults and kids in the living room. She then secretly reported the lively scene to Fu Zhengyun.
At that time, Fu Zhengyun was having dinner with his sons and daughters-in-law but did not have much appetite as he felt that the atmosphere was desolate. Noticing that his phone kept vibrating, he picked it up and saw the pictures and voice messages sent by the chef.
A smile finally appeared on his gloomy face. “Haha! Good, good. Let’s eat!”
Meanwhile, at Wutong Residence, everyone was lounging in the living room. The men were talking about business, whereas the women were chatting while watching television. Bao and Yu were almost the same age and were both boys. As such, they shared similar interests. The former brought a lot of his toys and shared them with Yu.
Due to her big belly, Shi Nuan sat on the couch the entire time and did not move much. A gentle expression was seen on her face as she watched the two children play together.
When Shen Qianan perceived that, she chuckled. “At first, I really thought that a child was a burden. But after having Yu, I felt that he was a gift from heaven.”
Her eyes were filled with joy as she spoke. Upon hearing her words, Shi Nuan nodded. “Yes. Both Yu and Bao are very cute.”
“Indeed!” Pei Huan chimed in as well. “But your situation is much better. Look at Chengyan. He is by your side all the time. No matter where you are, he can’t bear to leave you.” The next second, she glanced at Shen Qianan. “My case is almost the same as Qianan. We raised our kids alone. It’s hard.”
Li Heng, who was in the middle of a jovial conversation, stopped talking all of a sudden when he heard Pei Huan’s remark.
Tilting his head, he looked in her direction with an unfathomable look in his eyes.
At that moment, Fu Chengyan and Su Shaoqing paused as well. In actuality, they all had good sight and hearing due to the environment they lived in all year round. Thus, they heard the conversation about children between Pei Huan and Shen Qianan clearly.
Unlike the emotions felt by Li Heng, Fu Chengyan was somewhat grateful for his relationship with Shi Nuan.
Pei Huan’s departure and Bao’s birth had always been Li Heng’s regrets. Although they had gotten back together, he still felt he missed out on those years.
Meanwhile, Su Shaoqing also had a different emotion from Li Heng.
The latter had Bao and could still see his wife and child, but he had no one. Ever since he made that mistake, he seemed to lose the chance to amend it. Initially, he and Fu Ling were supposed to have a cute child by then.
There was a gleam in Pei Huan’s eyes as she looked at Li Heng and flashed him a faint smile. She was using her action to tell him about her intention.
Narrowing his eyes, Li Heng picked up his phone and sent something to her. It was unknown what the content of the message was, but she seemed delighted, judging by the quirk of her lips. With that, he heaved a sigh of relief.
Just then, the doorbell rang again. That time around, Su Shaoqing was the one to walk over to the door. The moment he opened the door, his gaze was filled with befuddlement.
With his hand still gripping the doorknob stiffly, his eyes were locked on the person standing in the doorway.
His gaze was so intense that it looked like he was about to devour the latter.
Everyone thought it was strange that it took Su Shaoqing so long to open the door. Out of curiosity, they shifted their gazes toward the door and came to a realization.
The person standing outside the door was stunned as though she did not expect Su Shaoqing to be the one opening the door. After returning to her senses, she pursed her lips. “Mr. Su, are you not going to let me in?”
Fu Ling’s clear voice jolted Su Shaoqing out of his trance. Squeezing the doorknob, he immediately made way for her. “Sorry. I… I just didn’t expect you to come here.”
Fu Ling threw him a glance. “I live here!” After that, she no longer paid him any attention and walked inside. “Chengyan, Nuan!” At the sight of Pei Huan, a smile finally graced her lips. “Huan, why are you here too?”
Seeing the people inside the house, she felt somehow surprised. “Nuan, have you been discharged from the hospital?”
“Yes!” Shi Nuan laughed. “Ling, come and sit here!”
Fu Ling nodded and sat down between Pei Huan and Shi Nuan.
Pei Huan and Fu Ling were good friends. In fact, they were each other’s best friends back in university as they shared the same dorm. Despite not seeing each other for a long time, they still had a close relationship.
In truth, Pei Huan missed Fu Ling very much. As soon as the latter took a seat beside her, she excitedly grabbed her hand and chatted with her. “You’ve lost some weight. And why did you come home so late?”
“My workload at the office has been heavy recently. I had to work overtime.” It seemed Fu Ling had become more composed compared to a few years back.
Pei Huan had also noticed the changes in her. At the same time, she also knew what happened between Fu Ling and Su Shaoqing. However, she was struggling to fend for herself back then, so she did not know the exact details of the accident that befell Fu Ling.
Regardless, she more or less felt heartbroken upon seeing the current Fu Ling.
Su Shaoqing’s gaze darkened. Just as he was about to close the door, another figure walked in. “Jingxiu? Why are you here too?”
Pei Jingxiu stared at him as though the latter was a fool. “Can’t I come?”
Su Shaoqing, who was initially in a bad mood, raised his brows when he heard Pei Jingxiu’s response. “Of course, you can. This is Chengyan’s place, after all. You can come as you like!”
Pei Jingxiu was taken aback as he did not understand what Su Shaoqing meant by those words. Usually, the latter would respond with a few more sarcastic remarks. Yet, he did not say anything else today. After sweeping his gaze around the living room, Pei Jingxiu furrowed his brows. There are so many people here.
“I asked him to come. It’s been a long time since we all gathered together!” Just then, Fu Chengyan spoke. “Where’s Ning Xi?”
Pei Jingxiu lifted his eyes and responded impassively, “She went back to Sheen City.” Evidently, he did not feel like talking about Ning Xi.
Seeing the big group in their house, Shi Nuan cast a look at Fu Chengyan as she grabbed his hand. “There are so many people here. Can you handle it?”
After all, some of them don’t get along well with each other.
Her question was referring to Su Shaoqing and Fu Ling.
That was because Shi Nuan noticed Fu Ling did not talk much since returning home and also looked somehow distracted. Apparently, the latter did not know Su Shaoqing would come over on that day.
At the same time, Shi Nuan was oblivious to the fact that Fu Ling was living at Wutong Residence as well. “Why isn’t Ling staying at the Fu residence?”
Fu Chengyan cast a glance at Su Shaoqing and Fu Ling. “Her relationship with the Fu clan is complicated. I reckon she’d be unwilling to live there. She was upset when she went to the Su residence that day. It seems like the Su family went too far that year, so it’s still hard for her to forgive them!” He then frowned and continued, “I asked Zhou Zheng to pick her up and send her here a few days ago. It’s quieter here since there are lesser people around.”
Shi Nuan shrugged and smiled in resignation. “But it’s no longer quiet now.”
Her husband caressed her head affectionately. “It’s fine. Ling has great self-control. She won’t do anything reckless.”
However, she let out a sigh in response. “Don’t you understand? The more she restrains herself, the less she will talk about her true feelings. If you want to help her and Shaoqing, this method definitely won’t work!”
“Hmm?” Fu Chengyan raised his brows. “How do you know I want to help them?” With a smile playing on his lips, he probed again. “Tell me, hmm?”
“Anyone can see that. Why did Shaoqing come back here again when he had left just now? You were the one who asked him to come back, and you are the only one who knows that Ling lives here!”
“What a smart girl!” He could not help but caress her head again. “All right now. Go and talk with Ling!”
