Chapter 535 Your Sister Is Shi Nuan
Noticing that Shen Qianan did not want to look at the document, Shen Shixiu frowned and said, “It’s fine if you don’t want to look at it. He only gave this to me, and it is your freedom to receive it or not.”
Shen Shixiu placed the document on the coffee table. His tone was calm as if this had nothing to do with him. Shen Qianan was, however, unable to stay calm at this. She looked at Shen Shixiu and gritted her teeth. “If that’s the case, why did you bring it over? Why did you agree with it? Why-”
Being a little carried away by her emotions, Shen Qianan was slightly louder when she yelled at Shen Shixiu. Her voice awakened Yu, who was sleeping in the next room.
After being awakened by the noise, Yu started crying when he did not see his mother near him. Hearing Yu’s crying, Shen Qianan immediately pushed open the door and picked him up in her arms. “Yu, don’t cry. I’m here for you.”
“Mommy!” Yu hugged Shen Qianan. “Mommy!”
“Yes, I’m here. I am here for you.”
Shen Qianan paced back and forth with Yu in her arms as she gently patted his back. She hummed a melody and slowly put him back to sleep.
Carefully tucking Yu under the sheets, Shen Qianan then quietly walked out of the room.
Seeing that, Shen Shixiu’s gaze softened a little. “Is Yu asleep?”
Shen Qianan’s expression was a little grim when she saw Shen Shixiu. “Did you come here to give me this? If so, your mission is accomplished now. Please leave. Yu and I need our rest too.”
Shen Shixiu frowned. “Qianan.”
“What else do you want to tell me?” Shen Qianan glanced coldly at Shen Shixiu. “What else is there for us to talk about?”
“Don’t you want to know why Fu Chengyan asked me to give this to you?” Shen Shixiu saw Shen Qianan slightly swayed, but she was still holding tightly onto the doorknob as she said, “What else? I was young and foolish back then to cross him, and I am sure you already know about those things! I am just a replacement for Shi Nuan, and-”
“Qianan!” Shen Shixiu interrupted her sentence and said, “Shi Nuan was kidnapped a few days ago!”
Shen Qianan froze when she heard that. “What did you say?”
“Her kidnapper is the same person who kidnapped you four years ago. He was also wearing a silver mask!”
Shen Qianan staggered and slumped on the couch. Her gaze was a little blank, but she quickly looked at Shen Shixiu again. “Are you telling me the truth?”
“I am.” He did not have any reason to lie to her.
Shen Qianan shivered upon hearing that. “Is it him? Is he in Jiang City? Kidnapped?” Shen Qianan murmured at herself before looking at him again. “Why did he kidnap Shi Nuan?”
After asking that question, Shen Qianan thought of something else right away and smiled helplessly. “Look at me being foolish. I’m sure he kidnapped Shi Nuan to threaten Fu Chengyan like what he did to me back then, am I right?”
Perhaps Shen Qianan herself was unaware that she was shivering in fear when she talked about that person. “What happened in the end? Is Shi Nuan-” She wanted to ask if Shi Nuan ended up like her.
On second thought, she dismissed the idea. If the kidnapper made a move on Shi Nuan, it must be because of Fu Chengyan.
“Is Shi Nuan-” She hesitated again to ask the question.
“They saved her.”
Shen Qianan heaved a sigh of relief when she heard that, but what Shen Shixiu said next stunned her, and she could not budge after hearing that.
“He injected a virus into Shi Nuan’s body, and the virus took effect. She’s in the hospital now, but not even Su Shaoqing can come up with a way to help her.”
Virus? ”Are you sure?”
“Yes!” Shen Shixiu nodded and fixed his gaze on Shen Qianan.
He could see shock and disbelief reflected in Shen Qianan’s eyes, and there was also a hint of guilt and uneasiness among those emotions.
However, Shen Qianan suddenly smiled and turned around to look at Shen Shixiu. “Since Shi Nuan is down with a virus, you should be looking for a doctor instead of me. What can I do about that? Hah. It’s ridiculous of Fu Chengyan to look for you and me when his wife is not doing well.”
“Qianan, the virus is extremely rare, and Su Shaoqing still does not have a clear solution for treating Nuan. But then, he did mention a plausible solution,” said Shen Shixiu as he noticed a slight change in Shen Qianan’s expression like she was considering letting her guard down.
“They should try the solution then.”
“Su Shaoqing said he needs blood samples from Shi Nuan’s family to extract the active enzyme. Su Huaibei and Shu Qing should be at the hospital now.”
Shen Qianan shuddered a little and pursed her lips. “I see.” Although she appeared calm, her reactions still betrayed her inner thoughts.
“Qianan, you’re Shi Nuan’s sister too, so-”
“So?” Shen Qianan stood up agitatedly. “So, this is Fu Chengyan’s hidden objective all this while. He only needs me when his wife’s life is in danger. Is this because I am her sister? Did he forget that Shi Nuan and I only share a mother? Won’t he be concerned that my blood isn’t as pure to save her life? Ha!” Shen Qianan laughed. “Here comes the day where Fu Chengyan needs to beg for someone else to do him a favor!”
“Qianan, there’s something that I did not tell you all this while.” Shen Shixiu could not bear himself to see Shen Qianan’s tears rolling down her cheeks despite her laughing. However, thinking that Shi Nuan’s life was still at risk with the virus torturing her, Shen Shixiu figured he should force himself to tell the truth. “You and Shi Nuan are of the same parents, which means you are indeed her biological sister!”
Shen Qianan froze upon hearing that. She stared at Shen Shixiu in disbelief and then laughed wildly. “Shen Shixiu, is this the best you can come up with to save Shi Nuan’s life? By lying to me? Shi Nuan is Su Huaibei’s daughter, whereas Shen Feng is my father. I am your sister!”
“Qianan, to be frank with you, you and Nuan are both Su Huaibei’s daughters.” Shen Shixiu looked at her. “My father only adopted you back then because your parents had a misunderstanding, and my parents owed your mother a favor, so…”
“No way. Shen Shixiu, do you think I’ll believe what you just said? You’re just using every single way you can think of to make me save Shi Nuan’s life. I’m here to tell you I will not fall for your lie, I-”
“I’m telling you everything I should tell you, and it’s up to you to believe me or not. I think you must look at the documents inside. They will tell you the things from four years ago and some information on you and Nuan’s backgrounds.” Shen Shixiu felt like he had already done his best. “I can give you a day to process everything. There is still no certainty about Nuan’s situation. If you already thought things through, you can always drop by at the hospital.”
After saying those, Shen Shixiu walked away, leaving Shen Qianan standing still on the same spot, and she was still in a daze.
Her gaze shifted to the stack of documents on the coffee table, and she looked troubled.
She could not stop clenching her fists, relieving them, and then clenching them again.
These documents were like Pandora’s box. She was afraid that the information on the documents would lead her life to despair.
That whole evening, Shen Qianan sat in the living room staring blankly at the documents. It was not until nighttime that Yu woke up and called out to her that her mind was finally dragged back to reality. She quickly kept the documents away and walked to the room to pick Yu up in her arms. “Yu, are you hungry?”
Yu nodded and tilted his head at Shen Qianan. “Mommy, you were crying!”
Yu was still a kid, but he had a mature mind. He noticed Shen Qianan’s reddened eyes and reached out his chubby hands to rub gently on her cheeks before leaning closer to blow her face. “Mommy, don’t cry.”
“I’m not crying. I did not cry.” Shen Qianan patted his back and looked at him apologetically. “I forgot to make you dinner today.”
“Mommy, let’s go out and eat. I have money, a lot of money, and I can buy you meat!”
His innocent words made Shen Qianan’s eyes turn red again. She nodded. “Sure. Yu, you should go get changed now, and I’ll bring you out for dinner.”
Later that night, Shen Qianan held Yu in her arms as they watched TV, but she could not stop thinking about Shi Nuan’s face.
She was reminded of Shen Shixiu telling her that she and Shi Nuan were biological sisters that shared the same parents.
Shen Qianan lowered her head and looked at Yu. Her heart was heavy with her complicated thoughts. No words were enough to describe her emotions at that moment. Her resemblance with Shi Nuan was not only because of Shu Qing but also Su Huaibei.
She wondered how Shi Nuan reacted when she heard about this, but Shen Qianan knew better than anyone else that she did not intend to acknowledge Su Huaibei or Shu Qing as her parents despite finding the truth. She hated both of them. Neither Shu Qing nor Su Huaibei was qualified to be her parents. However, her heart still felt heavy when she thought of Shi Nuan.
Like her, Shi Nuan was just another abandoned child of Shu Qing and Su Huaibei. Shi Nuan was only slightly luckier than Shen Qianan because she did not grow up knowing her biological parents abandoned her.
Looking at Yu sleeping soundly in her arms, Shen Qianan thought of Shi Nuan, who was also pregnant at that time. She started feeling uneasy again. It was a strange feeling that she could not describe, but it surely made her feel terrible.
Shen Qianan carefully settled Yu on the couch next to her. Then, with a trembling hand, she picked up the documents Shen Shixiu had given her earlier that day.
As Shen Qianan slowly flipped through the pages, her hands suddenly shivered, dropping several pages on the floor.
She had to leave for the hospital, and she had to leave right now.
Getting changed, Shen Qianan looked at Yu, who was still asleep. She reached out a hand to stroke his cheeks, then called Shen Shixiu on the phone. “I feel like going to the hospital, but Yu…”
“Go ahead. I’ll take care of him while you’re away,” said Shen Shixiu in his low voice.
Shen Qianan bit her lips. “W-Where are you now?”
“Downstairs. I’ll go up now.”
Shen Shixiu hung up the phone. He held a half-lit cigarette between his long and slender fingers. Placing away his phone, he glanced at the lights upstairs before putting out his cigarette and walking up the stairs.
Shen Qianan did not expect Shen Shixiu to be waiting for her downstairs. She was startled when she opened the door and saw him standing outside. Opening the door for him, she also made way for him to walk inside the room as she said, “Yu is asleep now, and he won’t wake up so soon. If he does, you can make him some milk with the milk powder there.”
Shen Qianan pointed at the milk powder on the coffee table and continued, “You are not related to Shi Nuan nor me in any way, and I wonder why you’re doing this for us.”
