Fu Heng merely snorted. “Everyone can make empty promises. I want to see what you’ll do.”
“Yes. I’ll prove that I am the best match for Huan!” Li Heng promised while he poured a bowl of soup for Fu Heng. “Dad, try some soup.”
Fu Heng nodded in satisfaction.
In the meantime, at the Li Group. After Li Heng’s departure, the share prices had been dropping drastically. In just a few days, a company in Sheen City had bought the small shareholders over.
A storm was brewing right in the Li Residence. After reading the files sent over by the Li Group, Li Xinzhi trembled in rage. “Find out what this company is. Why don’t I know of this company which is in Jiang City?”
“Great-grandpa, this isn’t a company in Jiang City.”
“Then where is it located?”
“Sheen City!”
Li Xinzhi was dumbstruck. “What? Did you say Sheen City?” Impossible! How could they take advantage of the Li Group’s situation?
“Yes, the company is from Sheen City. It had only prospered these few years. Even those in Sheen City had no idea of this company’s background. Also, this Prosperous Group had acquired over ten companies in Sheen City. They were established around four years ago, but their financial power…” Li Xufan trailed off.
He was stunned at the turn of events too. The sudden deficit of the Li Group had happened too suddenly. Moreover, it happened right after Li Heng left. “Great-grandpa, do you think it was my uncle’s doing?”
“That’s impossible!” Li Xinzhi shook his head. “He isn’t that capable. Besides, he has been managing the Li Group all the while in Jiang City. He doesn’t have the time.”
“But…” If it weren’t Li Heng, Li Xufan couldn’t think of anyone else who was capable of hitting the mark.
“That’s enough. Find out who it is. You can leave now.” Li Xinzhi dismissed him with a wave as there was nothing he could do. He added, “Now, the company is in tenterhooks. You and your great-uncle should be more careful. Don’t fight among yourselves.”
“Yes, Great-grandpa.” Li Xufan had a thought. “Then what about Shengyuan Group?”
Li Xinzhi felt his head throbbing at the mention of Shengyuan Group. “Are they cancelling the project?”
“Yes!” Li Xufan knew why the project was cancelled. Pei Huan was Fu Heng’s daughter. As the Li clan had mistreated Pei Huan, the Fu clan would avenge her for sure.
Fu Chengyan and Li Heng were best friends. The former was exactly like Li Heng and would make decisions based on his mood. Those who offended these two would die a horrible death.
Back then, Fu Chengyan didn’t take action because of Li Heng. Now that Li Heng was no longer working in the Li Group, Fu Chengyan went all out. He must’ve taken advantage of the Li Group’s situation and hit the mark.
Li Xinzhi’s expression darkened at the thought. “Meet this Fu Chengyan and find out what he wants. The Li Group can’t afford to lose that piece of land!”
“But Great-grandpa…” Li Xufan was about to say it was an arduous task, but when he met Li Xinzhi’s gaze, he nodded. “I’ll try.”
At the hospital, Li Heng went to Su Shaoqing’s office. He glanced at the busy bee Su Shaoqing and asked, “Hey, when will you stop working?”
“I wish I can stop working too!” Su Shaoqing stared at Li Heng. “You’re jobless, but I have a job. I’m a dedicated employee.”
Li Heng snorted and drummed his fingers on the desk. “You’re a dedicated employee? Then all the other excellent employees must be dead.”
“Hey!” Su Shaoqing couldn’t take it anymore. “Don’t insult my professional ethics.” He threw his pen away and stared at Li Heng sternly. “What do you have to say? Say it now and leave. I’m really busy! I don’t have time for you.”
“Okay. Is the result for Bao’s checkup ready?”
“Da*n it!” Su Shaoqing slapped his own forehead. “I nearly forgot about it. It’s here!”
Su Shaoqing rummaged around for the report and gave it to Li Heng, who was glowering at him maliciously. He trembled in fear and declared, “This isn’t entirely my fault. I’m really busy with a few complicated surgeries. Also, I’m still figuring out Pei Huan’s checkup. There’s a virus in her body.”
“What did you say?” Li Heng tightened his grip on the report.
Su Shaoqing inhaled sharply. “My friend, calm down. I’m not done yet. I can’t figure out what the virus is for now. I suspect it’s a new virus that has been in her body for some time. So…”
Li Heng’s face contorted as he pursed his lips angrily. He flipped open Bao’s report. At the sight of the unfamiliar terms, he flung the report back to Su Shaoqing. “I don’t understand a word. Just tell me!”
“To conclude, this new virus in his body is similar to the one in Huan’s body. I suspect the virus in Bao’s body is a new variant that is much more dangerous. Li Heng,” Su Shaoqing paused. “Be careful. I think the other party is coming after you.”
Li Heng clenched his fists, utterly infuriated. It took him some time before he calmed down and regulated his breathing. “I don’t want Huan to find out about this. Also, you must get the antidote!”
“Don’t worry. I’ve made the necessary arrangements. Now that the virus is in Huan’s body, what about Aunt Ning?”
Li Heng furrowed his brows. This will complicate things.
None of them knew what the virus in Pei Huan and Bao’s body was, nor how dangerous it would be.
When the Li Group was in total chaos, Liang Lin and Pei Jingxiu were in the Prosperous Group. The former handed a file with documents on the acquisition to Pei Jingxiu. “Mr. Pei, this is the shares of the Li Group we bought for the past month. Including the shares in Mr. Li’s possession, he’s now the biggest shareholder in the Li Group. But—”
Pei Jingxiu curled his lips. “This isn’t important to Li Heng at all.”
Liang Lin couldn’t figure out the men’s plan. Li Heng and Fu Chengyan had established this company in Sheen City three years ago, but the person who ran the company was Pei Jingxiu.
“Continue buying the shares of the Li Group. I want to see when they will fall by the daily trading limit.”
“Yes!”
Pei Jingxiu’s gaze turned sharp. “Is there anything else?”
“Mr. Li told me to help you out for now. You’ll be arranging my work from now on.”
Pei Jingxiu nodded. “If that’s the case, you should stay in Sheen City and take charge.”
“What?” Liang Lin jumped to his feet. “Mr. Pei, you…”
“I need to go back to Jiang City to deal with something. You can talk to Ning Xi and make the decisions yourselves. Only come to me when both of you can’t solve them!”
Pei Jingxiu stood up and hung his jacket over his arm before making a call to Ning Xi. “Stay in Sheen City and help Liang Lin. Don’t return to the Ning family without my permission.”
“Yes!”
Liang Lin parted his lips as he watched Pei Jingxiu leaving the office sorrowfully.
Pei Jingxiu arrived in Jiang City at 3 p.m. with Dr. Paul. They headed straight to Su Shaoqing’s hospital.
It was rare for Li Heng, Fu Chengyan, Su Shaoqing, and Pei Jingxiu to get together. This time, they gathered to discuss Ning Xin and Pei Huan’s condition. Dr. Paul was a prestigious medical expert. Li Heng had run out of ideas, so he asked for Pei Jingxiu’s help.
After Dr. Paul read the report prepared by Su Shaoqing, he furrowed his brows. “Pei, this is a new virus. Only those from K Nation have access to it. I’ve heard about it but have never come across it in real life.”
Pei Jingxiu’s forehead creased as he glanced at Fu Chengyan and Li Heng.
Li Heng remained silent for a while before he spoke. “Does this virus have an incubation period? How long will the incubation period be? If a donor needs to donate her blood marrow, will it cause any harm to the donor and recipient?
“Well,” Dr. Paul seemed stumped. “I’ve never actually seen this new virus before, so I can’t give you an exact answer. How long has the virus been in the patient’s body?”
Li Heng, Fu Chengyan, and Pei Jingxiu turned to look at Su Shaoqing. “Why are you guys staring at me?” he demanded. “I can’t be sure, too. Since Huan hadn’t been with us for three years, I am afraid she must’ve been injected three years ago.”
Su Shaoqing himself wasn’t sure, hence he made that assumption.
“Three years ago? When Huan was pregnant with Bao?” Fu Chengyan’s brows knitted together. “That person actually injected a pregnant woman. Li Heng.”
Li Heng was already scowling angrily. “We need to find a solution soon. Mom can’t wait any longer. Besides, Huan and Bao might get sick anytime.” He was terribly worried.
I’ve been through a lot and got used to seeing people die, but I’m rendered helpless in front of Pei Huan. I have to admit, I’m really terrified. ”Dr. Paul, please save my wife and son.”
Paul looked slightly pained. “You’re Pei’s friend, so I’ll try my best. But because I’ve never come across this virus before, you need to be prepared.”
Su Shaoqing and Pei Jingxiu accompanied Dr. Paul to the lab. After a long silence, Fu Chengyan patted Li Heng’s shoulder. “You should go to Huan now. I’ll arrange for someone to investigate this in K Nation. But you should know that only a few people will dare to target you.”
